Core Curriculum
The requirements for graduation, including policies and specific courses, are subject to periodic review and may be changed as determined by the faculty of the School.
A minimum of 190 units of professional study is required for the PharmD degree in addition to a set of specific graduation requirements. The core curriculum consists of 163 units.
In the core curriculum, students complete:
- 109 units of didactic courses
- 12 units of Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPEs) and
- 42 units of Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPEs).
Students complete required pathway courses as well as elective coursework to meet the minimum graduation requirement of 190 units. A variety of electives are offered to provide exposure to current issues and practices in pharmacy and health care.
Milestone assessments
The Pharmacy Curricular Outcomes Assessment (PCOA) Exam is administered to all students during the first and third year. The purpose of this examination is to assess students’ with respect to the curricular targets of the PharmD program and readiness to begin required Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPEs).

Years 3 & 4
Students complete 42 units of core Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences in Years 3 & 4 beginning in spring quarter of the third year through winter quarter of the fourth year (spring quarter for Pharmaceutical Sciences pathway students). The timing of each APPE depends upon the APPE schedule assigned to the individual student.
