Human Genetics Postdoctoral Position at UCSF’s Asthma Collaboratory

We are seeking a highly motivated, team-oriented individual interested in Human Genetics, Bioinformatics, Population Genetics, and/or Statistical Genetics. This individual will lead a whole genome sequence (WGS) analysis of > 19,000 minority children with and without asthma. All children have detailed measures of social and environmental measures, which will enable gene-environment interaction analyses. A subset of 3,500 children have RNA for whole transcriptome (RNA Seq) analyses.

The successful applicant will provide statistical and bioinformatic support for genetic studies related to asthma in racially mixed (admixed) populations. Responsibilities include data processing and analysis, results interpretation, and both written and oral reporting of findings and their significance to audiences of scientifically diverse backgrounds. Additional responsibilities may be given, commensurate with demonstrated abilities, teamwork, and leadership. The successful candidate is expected to perform statistical analyses to support publications, grant applications, and presentations. The successful candidate is also expected to assist in teaching and training students, postdoctoral fellows, and collaborating investigators in the use and analysis of large, complex databases.

The Asthma Collaboratory, headed by Dr. Esteban G. Burchard, MD, MPH, specializes in identifying genetic contributions to asthma and asthma-related traits in ethnically diverse human populations. The Asthma Collaboratory is located on the new and vibrant Mission Bay Campus of UCSF with close proximity to the new NBA Warriors basketball stadium, train lines, and ferries. Our group is highly collaborative and multidisciplinary, and the successful applicant must be able to effectively communicate and collaborate with clinicians, geneticists, epidemiologists and bioinformaticians. We seek a colleague with a collaborative mindset and a passion for teaching and mentoring students. The successful applicant must have a strong statistical background, excellent writing skills, and innovative biological insight to join our team at the forefront of characterizing and evaluating the etiology of pediatric asthma in diverse human populations.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in the area of Bioinformatics, Population Genetics, and/or Statistical Genetics
  • Experience in the analysis of next-generation sequencing data, including the manipulation of large-scale genomic data and effective utilization of computer clusters
  • Familiarity with genomic/genetic databases (e.g., UCSC genome browser, dbSNP, etc.) and software packages (including but not limited to PLINK, IMPUTE2, ADMIXTURE, GCTA, GATK, and bcftools) relevant to the study of statistical genetics
  • Demonstrated knowledge and programming experience in cluster computing environments (especially SGE), Unix, R, and Python (or Perl instead of Python).
  • Highly attentive to detail with a penchant for producing timely, accurate work
  • Capable of processing raw data instead of taking a well-formatted data file to run a software package
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to manage multiple projects and multiple PIs
  • Highly motivated and committed to biomedical research

UCSF is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. The Asthma Collaboratory is committed to increasing diversity in the sciences. Applications from women and minorities are strongly encouraged.
