Who should apply?
The Executive Track is designed for experienced professionals seeking to advance into leadership while continuing to work. The Foundational Track is designed for recent graduates and early-career professionals.
What are the differences between the Executive and Foundational Tracks?
The Executive Track is a five-quarter hybrid program designed for working professionals and culminates in a master's thesis. The Foundational Track is a full-time, four-quarter, in-person program with a faculty-mentored capstone project.
Admissions and Application
Do I need prior regulatory affairs experience?
No. Applicants from diverse academic and professional backgrounds are encouraged to apply if they have a strong interest in healthcare innovation and regulatory science.
What application materials are required?
Applicants submit a Personal Statement, Resume/CV, official transcripts, two letters of recommendation, and any required international documentation. Selected applicants will be invited to participate in a virtual admissions interview.
Who should write my letters of recommendation?
Executive Track: Letters may come from academic or professional references, Foundational Track: At least one letter must be from a professor or faculty member. The second letter may come from either an academic or professional reference.
Is the program suitable for international students?
Yes. International applicants are welcome and must satisfy UCSF Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs (GEPA) admission requirements, including English-language proficiency requirements.
Curriculum and Learning Experience
What will I learn?
Students study regulatory science, global regulatory frameworks, AI, digital health, Software as a Medical Device (SaMD), quality systems, drug and medical device development, entrepreneurship, leadership, and ethics.
How is the curriculum structured?
The curriculum combines core coursework with experiential learning, preparing students to navigate the full lifecycle of healthcare product development.
What is the Executive Track thesis?
Executive Track students complete a master's thesis that integrates advanced regulatory science concepts with a strategic issue relevant to their professional interests.
What is the capstone experience?
Foundational Track students complete an individual faculty-mentored capstone project that applies classroom learning to a real-world regulatory science or digital innovation challenge.
Will I gain practical experience?
Yes. Students participate in applied projects, case studies, industry workshops, guest lectures, and experiential learning opportunities throughout the program.
