Chemical Biology and Biophysics Laboratory

Facility

The Arkin Lab is part of the Small Molecule Discovery Center (SMDC) in the UCSF School of Pharmacy at the University of California, San Francisco. The SMDC is a laboratory devoted to the idea that academics can play an important role in developing new therapeutics. The SMDC mission is to collaborate in the discovery of small molecules that modulate biological processes and have the potential to alter disease states. Michelle Arkin, PhD, oversees the high-throughput screening facility and a group of postdoctoral scholars and staff scientists who work collaboratively to develop drug-discovery technologies and novel drug leads. The facility runs 12 to 15 screens per year. The SMDC is distinguished from many academic screening facilities by the presence of a highly experienced team of medicinal chemists directed by Adam Renslo, PhD. (See Renslo Lab.)
