Experiential Education

Preceptor and students in PharmD degree program

Real-life, hands-on clinical experiences are key to UCSF doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) degree education. Guided by expert preceptors, students gain skills serving a richly diverse patient population.

Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences – IPPE

Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPEs) run throughout the first year and most of the second year of the UCSF doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) curriculum. Students learn contemporary pharmacy practice inside community pharmacies in year one, and in health systems organizations in year two.

Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences – APPE

Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPEs) run throughout the third (final) year of the UCSF doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) curriculum.

Preceptor Teaching

The preceptor guides an IPPE student through the medication, ordering, dispensing, and administration process. They also assess student report accuracy and provide feedback to the student.
