Program Timeline

PharmD timeline

Year 1 (PharmD)

  • Complete first year requirements for the PharmD curriculum.
  • Meet with the professors of labs you are interested in to explore the possibility of completing rotations with them.
  • Apply for the Extended Discovery Project option (i.e., commit to 6 additional weeks of research over and above the 5 week required Discovery Project.)
  • Select Discovery Project lab (which will count as the first research lab rotation).

Year 2 (PharmD)

  • Complete second year requirements for the PharmD curriculum.
  • Consider completing the Teaching Assistant requirement* during PharmD studies.
  • Apply to the PSPG PhD program by the December deadline.
  • Interview with the PSPG PhD program if application is accepted, and accept offer of admission to the PSPG PhD program if selected.
  • Complete Extended Discovery Project (11 weeks total) to fulfill one research laboratory rotation.
  • Continue to explore options for second and third research laboratory rotations by meeting with faculty.

Year 3 (PharmD)

  • Finalize second and third research laboratory rotation selections.
  • Complete 6 Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPEs) for the PharmD program.
  • Complete second research lab rotation and graduate from the PharmD program.
  • Take exams for pharmacy licensure during the summer (for those interested in becoming a licensed pharmacist).

PhD timeline description

Year 1 (PhD)

  • Complete the third research lab rotation.
  • Select research advisor/research lab for PhD thesis.
  • Complete PhD required coursework and continue working on thesis research project.
  • Take an optional Clinical Experience elective where you can maintain your clinical pharmacy skills in your desired area of pharmacy.

Year 2 (PhD)

  • * Complete Teaching Assistant requirement (if not completed during the PharmD).
  • Prepare and take the PSPG PhD Qualifying exam.
  • Advance to candidacy and continue working on thesis research project.
  • Complete any additional program requirements for the Pharmaceutical Sciences and Pharmacogenomics (PSPG) PhD program.
  • Continuation of the Clinical Experience elective is optional.

Year 3 and beyond (PhD)

  • Complete any PSPG program requirements.
  • Continue working on thesis research project.
  • Continuation of the Clinical Experience elective is optional.
